Married Hindu women whose husbands are alive celebrate Vat Savitri Vrat to pray for their Parents-in-Law and husband for a long life. Married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later than that of North Indians.

Savitri is considered to be the historical character for ideal womanhood and noble patriarchy in Indian culture. The meaning of Savitri is Ved Mata Gayatri and Saraswati too. This festival is popularly known as Vat Savitri because of the law of remembering the legend of Savitri-Satyawan and worshiping the banyan tree.
Women circular round the banyan tree with wrapped threads around the tree, which is called protection. Along with the worship, women took blessed from her husband and distribute prasadam and sweets. Ultimately, according to Parivrata Savitri, make proper worship of your father-in-law.

How to observe Savitri Vrat?
◉ Women wake up early in the morning on the Savitri Vrat day and after taking bath, wear new clothes and ornaments including bangles. All married women wear red vermillion on the forehead, which is elongated to touch the line parting the hair.
◉ Savitri is symbolically represented by the grinding stone, locally known as Sila Pua. The grinding stone is thoroughly cleaned and worshipped. Bhoga or offering to Savitri consists of rice, wet pulses and locally available fruits like mango, jackfruit, banana etc.
◉ The fasting begins at sunrise and ends after sunset with the evening prayers.
In some places, parents, elders and brothers give a token amount of money to fasting woman. Women take the blessing of parents and other elders.
◉ The fast is broken by consuming the offering made to Savitri.
◉ Women also make it a point to read or listen to the Savitri and Satyavan story mentioned in the Mahabharata.
