Makar Sankranti festival is dedicated to the Hindu god Surya. When Sun shifted from dahanu to makar rashi or dakshinayan to uttarayan. Sankranti means the passing of the sun from one zodiac to the other one. Most of the Hindu festival celebrated as per moon position but this festival celebrated on the basic of Sun. Therefore no fix date declared as per Hindu Panchang.
Makara makes the end of the winter season and the start of longer days compare to winter. On this festival people pray to the sun and bathe at the Prayaga Raj at the Kumbh Mela as per Adi Shankara and in *Ganga Sagar. Traditionaly devotees took holy dip in rivers, especially Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery.
In different part of Indian, Makar Sankranti celebrated with different name. Sankranti in Karnataka, Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Maghi in Punjab and Haryana, Poush Sankranti in West Bengal, Uttarayana in Gujarat and Rajasthan and Uttarayani in Uttarakhand.
