In Vikram Samvat 1562 Margashirsha on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of the month, as a result of intensive worship of Swami Haridas, Shri Banke Bihari Ji Maharaj appeared in Nidhivan of Vrindavan. This manifestation festival of Bihari ji came to be known as Bihar Panchami.

On the day of Bihar Panchami, yellow clothes, golden ornaments for adornment, various types of fragrant flowers, dry fruits-pudding-kheer and 56 bhog are offered to the child form of Thakur ji. Bihar Panchami is a day to remember the appearance of Shri Banke Bihari ji as well as the unique devotion of Swami Haridas ji Maharaj to Bihariji.

Brief introduction of Swami Haridas ji - In Vikram Samvat 1560, Swami Haridas came to Vrindavan after taking initiation of couple-mantra from his father Shri Ashughir ji and went to Vrindavan and the place in the Sadhan forest area of Yamuna-bank as the center of his spiritual practice. Built, today this place is famous as Nidhivan. The intense keys of Nidhivan reverberated with the melodious singing of Swami Haridas Ji Maharaj.

Celebration in Shri Banke Bihari Mandir, Vrindavan

On the day of Bihar Panchami, the main festival starts from the Bihari Ji Prakatya Sthal of Nidhivan i.e. Shri Banke Bihari Temple.
❀ Shri Banke Bihari ji is anointed(Abhishek) early in the morning.
❀ In this process the symbolic footprints of Shri Banke Bihari Ji Maharaj are bathed with milk, curd, honey, ghee and water.
❀ Abhishek Prasad i.e. Panchamrit Prasad is distributed among the devotees.
❀ A grand procession is taken out from Nidhivan to Shri Banke Bihari Temple.
❀ The procession includes bands, music, decorated elephants, flags and kirtan troupes from far and wide.
❀ The procession is led by three chariots of Swami Shri Haridasji, Shri Vitthalji and Shri Goswami Jagannathji Maharaj.
❀ By the time of Rajbhog (12 noon), the procession travels through the main markets of Vrindavan to reach Shri Banke Bihari Temple.
❀ Deities of saints are welcomed inside the temple, after which Rajbhog is offered to Bihari ji.

Devotees believe that Bihari ji enjoys the food on this day by Swami Haridas ji himself sitting on his lap. Prasad is distributed among the devotees at the end of the festival after the Rajbhog Aarti. [Source: bihariji.org]
