Police lathi-charged the pilgrims at Warkari. This is the first time that
Varkaris - devotees of Lord Vithoba, (a form of Lord Krishna) are under state police action. During the procession, the devotees had an argument with the police. The incident took place when devotees were scrambling to enter the
Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Samadhi temple in Alandi town, 22 km from Pune city, during a ceremonial procession, which is part of the annual
Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage to Pandharpur.
The opposition has alleged that the police lathi-charged the pilgrims during the procession, and has demanded a high-level inquiry and strict action against the erring officials.
Citing the "atmosphere of tension and violence prevailing in the state", the NCP demanded the resignation of Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis if he could not handle law and order.
