At Puri, the Ceremonial bath of Bhagwan Jagannath, his brother Bhagwan Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra took place at Jagannath Temple today on the occasion of Snan Purnima. This event, organized on the full moon day of Jyeshtha month, is an important tradition of the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra.
The deities were brought from the sanctum sanctorum to the bathing pavilion, in a grand procession called 'Pahandi'. After the 'Mangal Aarti', the deities were prepared for the ritual bath. He is decorated with 'Senapatta', a special body armor made of 'Baula' wood by Daitapati.
After this, the servants of the temple go in a formal procession to fetch water from the Suna Kua (Golden Well) in the temple premises. The deities are then bathed with 108 pitchers of this water in a ritual called 'Jalabhishek'.
After bathing, the deities are decorated in Gajanana attire. This tradition is linked to the legend where Bhagwan Jagannath appeared in the form of an elephant to please a devotee of Bhagwan Ganesha.
