History and Architecture of Shri Annapurna Temple Varanasi
The present Annapurna temple was built by Maratha Peshwa Bajirao in the 18th century. Shri Annapurna Temple is a two-storey temple with a golden dome. There are two idols of Goddess Annapurna Devi in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple; One of gold and the other of brass. The brass idol is available for daily darshan whereas the gold idol can be seen only once in a year on the day of Annakoot. Annakoot festival is celebrated every year after Diwali. On this occasion coins are distributed to all the devotees. It is believed that whoever worships this coin, Annapurna Mata will bless him with a successful and prosperous life.

According to the legend, when Mother Parvati closed the three eyes of Lord Shiva, the whole world became dark. Due to this, Mother Parvati also lost her Gauri form and sought help from Lord Shiva to attain Gauri form again. On the advice of Lord Shiva, Mother Annapurna came to Varanasi in the form of Devi with a golden pot and ladle to donate food. Hence Mother Parvati again regained her Gauri form.

According to another belief, once Mother Parvati became very angry when Lord Shiva told her that the entire world (including food) was Maya. To demonstrate the importance of food he made all the food disappear from the earth and the whole world started suffering from hunger. Ultimately Lord Shiva came to Mother Parvati and accepted the importance of food. Then Mother Parvati became happy and offered food to Lord Shiva with her own hands and then prepared a kitchen for her devotees in Varanasi.

This temple is a beautiful example of Hindu architecture. The intricate carvings and sculptures on the exterior of the temple are worth seeing. The interior of the temple is also decorated with beautiful paintings and sculptures. The temple is a place of peace and tranquility. This temple is also a great place to learn about Hindu culture and religion.
