Sarund Mata Temple, also known as Sarund Ma and Chilay Mata, is located in Sarund village near Kotputli Highway, Kotputli in Rajasthan, India. This temple is dedicated to Mata Sarund, the incarnation of Devi Durga.
History and Architecture of Sarund Mata Mandir
The idol of Sarund Mata is installed in a cave. This temple of Mahabharata period is situated on the Aravali hills in Sarund village. To reach it one has to climb 284 stairs. The idol of Devi in the temple was installed by the Pandavas during the Gupta period. The idol of Chilaya Devi Maa installed in the temple is the form of the Kul Devi of the Pandavas and their dynasty Tanwar or Tomar Rajputs, the people of Khandelwal Mamodiya community worship Maa Surunda as the Kul Devi.
Legend has it that in the 16th century, Mughal Emperor Akbar brought a stock of liquor on camels after hearing about the idol of the Devi drinking alcohol. But every time the liquor kept on the camels was empty half way to the temple. Seeing this, Mughal emperor Akbar had to bow down. After this Akbar got the temple renovated. To reach it one has to pass through seven gates. Earlier there was only one gate, whereas the remaining six doors are from the Mughal era. It is said that these doors were built by Akbar. This trend continued during the time of Aurangzeb also.
Mata's Footsteps: It is believed that Mata Rani herself travels at night riding on a lion. According to the priests, the footprints of the Mata come halfway while climbing the temple, while 52 Bhaironu, 56 Kalva, 64 Yogini, 9 Narasimha and 5 Pir Kshetrapal are located in the circumambulation of the temple. Apart from this, the historical temple of Hanuman ji is also situated between the 500 year old stepwell, Chhatri and cave.

The Mandir remains open throughout the week and darshan timings are from 4 am to 8 pm.
Major festivals of Sarund Mata Temple
Navratri is the main festival of Sarund Mata Mandir. A three-day fair is held here from Saptami to Navami of Navratri. Besides, Jagran is also done on the night of Saptami. Apart from this, Jagran is also organized on Shukla Ashtami of every month. The annual festival of the temple is organized every year for four consecutive days from Vaishakh Shukla Shashthi to Navami. Thousands of devotees from every corner of the country including Rajasthan come to see the mata.

Sarund Mata Mandir is 10 km from Kotputli district. It takes two hours to reach here from Jaipur railway station. The distance between Jaipur and Kotputli is 128 km. The road distance is 107.8 km.
