Maa Purnagiri Temple is located in the hilly area of Tanakpur in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. This temple is situated near Sharda river. The temple is dedicated to Devi Maa. This temple is considered a Shaktipeeth and is one of the 108 Siddha Peethas. Maa Purnagiri Temple is also known as Punyagiri, this temple is also known for its miracles.
History and Architecture of Purnagiri Temple
According to history, Maa Purnagiri temple is considered to be Shaktipeeth among those 51 parts, the `navel` of Maa Sati had fallen at this place. Purnagiri temple is also considered as Mahakali Peeth. Purnagiri temple has a path of 500 steps. A glimpse of the Nepal border is visible from above. This place can be visited in a day as the trek takes around 3-4 hours and 1-2 hours to return from the temple.
Mysterious mythological stories related to this temple:
While returning from Purnagiri temple, you come across a temple which is known as Jhutha Mandir. It is said that a businessman had promised Matar Purnagiri that if hir wish of having a son was fulfilled, he would build an altar of gold. Mata fulfilled his wish. Greed overcame the businessman and he made an altar of copper plated with gold. While the altar was being raised, it was placed on the ground and the people carrying it were resting. When they tried to pick him up again, he did not move. The businessman understood the devi's displeasure, asked for forgiveness and built a temple on that altar.

Purnagiri temple is surrounded by Mallikagiri, Kalikagiri and Hamla peaks. While leaving for Purnagiri temple, devotees consider it mandatory to have darshan of Bhairon Baba. It is Bhairon Baba who gives consent to move ahead.

The temple remains open throughout the week and devotees can visit from 05:00 AM to 5:00 PM in winter and 05:00 AM to 07:00 PM in summer.

Chaitra Navratri, Navratri, Vishuva Sankranti and Kumaon are the major festivals in Purnagiri temple. Purnagiri Mela is organized in Purnagiri temple during Chaitra Navratri in the month of March-April. During this time, a large number of devotees come to see Maa Purnagiri.

Purnagiri Temple is situated on the hill of Tanakpur in Champawat district of Uttarakhand. It is 17 km from Tanakpur in Uttarakhand. You can reach this place by train or road. From Tanakpur Junction one can take a cab to reach that place.
