History and Architecture of Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir, Rameshwaram
The deity in the Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir is carved from a single stone and is said to be more than 18 feet in height. The most interesting part of the temple is the floating rocks. These are big heavy stones of 25-50 kg which are so porous that they float. You can touch them and feel them floating. It is said that Vishwakarma's sons Nalan and Neelan, who were part of the monkey army, touched the stones and made them float, so that Ram Sethu could be built.
The Rameshwaram Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple is believed to have previously been located in Dhanushkodi, but the idol was brought to mainland Rameshwaram after the original temple was destroyed following the 1964 cyclone. Some people believe that the Hanuman deity in the Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir is more than 700 years old.
According to the mythological story, during the war between Bhagwan Ram and the demon Ravana who had kidnapped Goddess Sita, Ravana sought help from Mahiravana, the king of the underworld. However, Bhagwan Hanuman, to protect Bhagwan Ram and Lakshmana, built a huge fort around them with his tail. The five forms of the Bhagwan appear majestically towards the north, south, east and sky. The mythological forms are named Varaha, Narasimha, Garuda, Hanuman and Hayagriva respectively. The complete incarnations are collectively known as the sacred 'Panchmukhi Avatar'.
