The Bata Mangala temple is dedicated to the Hindu Devi Mangala. The temple is located in Puri in the state of Odisha, India. You can say that this is the entrance to Puri. It is customary that devotees pray in this temple before going to the Jagannath temple.
Idol of Devi Bata Mangla:
It is said that when Brahma first came into existence, he was confused by seeing a great void around him. Devi Bata Mangala appeared to direct it to Lord Jagannath. Thus Brahma shifted his focus and proceeded with the task of cosmic creation.
Devi is sitting in Padmasana posture with a smiling face. Both hands are holding dice and marks. The Devi is worshiped under the mantra of Durga and is similar to Mahamangala, Sarva Mangala and Mangala.
In Odia language 'Bata' means 'Rasta', as Devi Mangala is displaced in the path of Shreekshetra, the Devi is known as Bata Mangala. The Devi is believed to guide pilgrims to Puri. The pilgrims and all the tourists offer prayers and darshan in all ways at the Bata Mangala temple when vehicles enter Puri and leave for their safe and happy journey from Puri.
At the time of Lord Jagannath's Nabakalebar festival, sacred wood-laden carriages enter Shreekshetra (Puri) after worshiping at the Bata Mangala temple. Famous rituals like Durga Puja, Dussehra, Chaitra Tuesday etc. are celebrated with great reverence in this temple.
