The world famous Kashi Vishwanath Mandir is located in Varanasi. This temple of Bhagwan Shiva is situated on the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi city of Uttar Pradesh. Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Bhagwan Shiva. This temple is also known as Vishweshwar. The word means 'ruler of the universe'. This temple is 15.5 meters high.

The present temple was built by Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar in the year 1780. It was later built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1853 with 1000 kg of pure gold.

According to mythology, Bhagwan Shiva came to Mount Kailash after marrying Devi Parvati. At the same time, Devi Parvati was staying at her father's house where she was not feeling well. One day Devi Parvati asked Bhagwan Shiva to take him to her home. Bhagwan Shiva agreed with the Devi and brought her to Kashi and established himself here in the form of Vishwanath-Jyotirlinga.
The mention of this temple is also found in Mahabharata and Upanishads. There is no concrete information about who built this temple. In the year 1194, after the looting of this temple by Muhammad Ghori, it was demolished. This temple was rebuilt but Sultan Mahmud Shah of Jaunpur again demolished it. According to historians, the Vishwanath temple was renovated by one of the Nauratnas of Akbar, Raja Todarmal. He got it renovated in the year 1585 with the help of Narayan Bhatt on the orders of Akbar.
Aurangzeb issued a farman in 1669. After which he ordered the demolition of the Kashi Vishwanath temple and built a mosque. At the same time, according to some historians, the Gyanvapi Mosque was built in the 14th century by the Sharqi Sultans of Jaunpur by demolishing the Vishwanath temple. But many historians deny this.
