Devi Jagatambika Temple is one of a group of about 25 temples in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India. Devi Jagadambi Temple also known as Jagadambika Temple, was originally dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu as the east facing door, Bhagwan Vishnu was given prominence at the entrance to the sanctum. This temple has been listed as a World Heritage Site due to its excellent architecture, art and historical importance.
History and Architecture of Jagadambi Temple Khajuraho
This temple is dedicated to Devi Jagadamba, The Devi has silver eyes and Havan Kund in the center of the temple. The temples of Khajuraho were built by the rulers of the Chandela dynasty between the 10th and 12th centuries. Along with other temples of Khajuraho, this temple has been listed as a World Heritage Site due to its excellent architecture, art and historical importance.
Some people believe that Maa Kali (Jagadamba) is actually an image of Parvati, painted in black. This temple is on the same platform of Kandariya Mahadev but is smaller in height. Built as a temple of Bhagwan Vishnu, this temple portrays the civilizations and cultures of the bygone era, which leaves the visitors spellbound. There is a belief among some others that this temple was dedicated to Devi Parvati (Maa Kali), and a beautiful image of her adorns the temple.
It is said that about 85 temples were built at this place, of which only twenty-five survive. The temples are among the masterpieces of Indian art. The Jagadambi temple dates to the mid-11th century and consists of a sanctuary with an aisle before a hall with a verandah. The outer walls are completely covered with sculptures. The rearing animals are kept in trenches in the wall.
