Girija Devi Temple is a very famous temple of Uttarakhand which is also known as Garjiya Temple. This is a holy Shakti temple where the presiding deity is Garjiya Devi. The temple is built on a rock in the middle of the Kosi river and is visited by thousands of devotees every year. Girija is one of the names of Parvati, the wife of bhagwan Shiva. The meaning of the word is who is born from the mountain (giri).
Mythology behind Girija Devi Temple
The temple is situated on a large rock in the Kosi river and is one of the most famous temples of Nainital district, also has a 9th century idol of Laxminarayan made of black granite. It is a holy Shakti temple and one of the most famous temples of Nainital district. The Katyuri kings, the rulers of Ramnagar, discovered the temple in 1840. It is said that the idol of Devi Parvati was found on the mountains in Garjia village and the temple was built.
This temple of Mata Girija is full of miracles. It is believed that the mound on which this temple of Mata is built, once came here by flowing from a mountain block. Seeing the temple flowing along the mound, Bhagwan Bhairav said, \"Thi Rau, Baina Thi Rau\" meaning 'Wait, wait sister' to stop it. It is believed that the mother has been living here since then with Lord Bhairav accepting his request. It is believed that the holy idol of Mata was found here during the excavation. The temple of Bhagwan Bhairav is also built just below this holy abode of Mata. It is believed that the worship of the mother is complete only after seeing Bhagwan Bhairav. Here Bhagwan Bhairon is specially offered Prasad of Khichdi.
Being the daughter of Giriraj Himalaya, Devi Parvati is also called Girija. People also believe that once upon a time lions used to come here and used to roam and roar in the temple of Mata. Since then people started calling it by the name of Garjia Mata's temple.
Major Festivals at Girija Devi Temple
The temple is also known as the festival of lights of the deities. Navratri, Kartik Purnima are the main festivals here. A large number of people from the surrounding areas visit the temple there daily to worship. Many people take bath in Kosi river near Garjia temple.
How to reach Girija Devi Temple?
This divine temple of Girija Devi is situated in Sunderkhal village, about 15 km from Ramnagar tehsil headquarter of Nainital district, which is built on a very small mound. This temple of Mata is just 10 km away from Corbett National Park. For darshan of Mata, devotees have to climb 90 steps to reach the court of Mata. It is built on a very small hill, so only one devotee can climb these steep steps at a time.
