Chaturshringi Temple History and Architecture
Chaturshringi (Chatur means four) is a mountain with four peaks. The Chatushringi temple is 90 feet high and 125 feet wide and is a symbol of strength and faith. One has to climb more than 170 steps to reach the temple of Devi Chatushringi. There are also shrines of Devi Durga and Lord Ganesha in the temple complex. It consists of eight miniature idols of Ashtavinayak. These small temples are situated on four different hills.
The legend associated with the temple is that, once there was a rich and prosperous merchant named Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan, who was an ardent believer of Devi Saptashringi Devi and used to visit Vani every now and then. But as he grew up, he could not travel and this prevented him from going to the temple and this created sorrow in his heart, he prayed to Saptashringi Devi with tears and then one night Devi Saptashringi Devi appeared in his dream and said to him, If you cannot come to me, I will come to you and be near you. He asked him to come to a mountain situated north-west of Pune and dig there. The place described by Devi was traced and a miracle happened as they found a natural idol of Devi (Swayambhu Devi). He constructed the temple at that place and it is the same temple which has been renovated from time to time, which is the present temple.
