Where is Badrinath Dham situated?
Badrinath Dham is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, situated on the banks of Alaknanda river in the lap of Himalayas, in which Badri Narayan, a form of Bhagwan Vishnu is worshipped.
According to mythology, once when Mata Lakshmi was pressing Bhagwan Vishnu's feet, at that time a wise saint was passing by, whose eyes suddenly fell on Bhagwan Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi. Seeing these, the saint got angry that Bhagwan Vishnu himself is lying down and is getting his wife to work. On criticizing Bhagwan Vishnu on this matter by Maharaj Saint, Bhagwan Vishnu got angry and left from there and went to the area of Badrinath and started doing severe penance.
After seeing all this, Mata Lakshmi also reached there and there should not be any obstacle in the penance of Bhagwan Vishnu, so Mata Lakshmi took seven trees of plum, also known as Badri, and got engaged in the service of Bhagwan Vishnu. So that there is no obstacle in the penance of Bhagwan Vishnu due to sunlight, rain and snow.
After the end of the penance, when Bhagwan Vishnu saw Devi Lakshmi in the plum tree, he told Devi Lakshmi that Devi you have done more penance than me, so your name will be before my name. Mata Lakshmi was giving shade to Bhagwan Vishnu by taking the form of a berry tree or Badri tree, also known as Nath and Swami, and this is the reason why this temple is called Badrinath. Because Badri became Mother Lakshmi and her Nath is Bhagwan Vishnu, that is why the one who is Badri's Nath is the same Badrinath.
Some people say that this place once used to have numerous bushes of berry i.e. Badri, hence it is also called Badrivan. It is called Badrinath from the time of Adi Shankaracharya. Vyas Muni was born in Badrivan itself and Vyas Muni's ashram was also in Badrivan, hence Maharishi Ved Vyas is also called Badrayana. On this basis the temple was named Badrinath.
After the establishment of Buddhism, when China invaded India, then the Chinese army destroyed the Badrinath temple and put the idol installed in the temple in the Narad Kund located there. Adi Shankaracharya installed that statue in the Garuda cave in order to revive Hinduism. Chandravanshi Garhwal King got the temple built at present and Maharani Ahilyabai of Indore offered three gold urns on top of this temple. Since then this temple has emerged as a pilgrimage site of Uttarakhand. The statue of Badrinarayan, a form of Bhagwan Vishnu installed in the Badrinath temple, can only be touched by the Napundri pada Brahmins of Kerala, India's southernmost state.
This land of Uttarakhand has been considered by Indian saints and Mahatmas as the meeting place of gods and nature. It is said that Narayana in Adi Yuga, Bhagwan Rama in Tretayuga, Veda Vyasa in Dwapar Yuga and Adi Shankaracharya in Kali Yuga threaded the threads of religion and culture in Badrinath.
