Alopi Devi Mandir is located in Alopibagh area of Prayagraj. Alopi Devi Mandir is also known as Alopishankari Shaktipeeth. This temple is recognized as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of the Mata. It is said that the claw of the right hand of Mata Sati was cut off at this place and fell into a pond here and became extinct. The temple is also known as Lalita Temple and Mahadeveshwari Temple. Alopi Devi Mandir remains the center of faith for millions of devotees and devotees from far and wide come here to seek their wishes. Devotees tie Raksha Sutra on their hands while making wishes here, about which it is said that as long as the Raksha Sutra remains tied, the Mata Mata will continue to protect that devotee.
History and Architecture of Alopi Devi Mandir
In the temple, instead of the idol of the Mata, a cradle (wooden dola) is worshiped which is hanging on a ten feet wide pond. There is a silver platform over a pond in the temple courtyard on which the cradle is hanging. Here devotees tie Raksha Sutra and seek protection from the Mata. Alop means missing and Shankari means Mata Parvati.
It is believed that at this place in Prayagraj, the claw of Mata Sati's hand got cut off and fell, but as soon as it fell into a pond here, it disappeared. Since then this temple was named Alopshankari. Alopibagh, the area of Prayagraj where this Shaktipeeth is present, has also been named after the fame of this temple. This Shaktipeeth is very close to the famous Sangam Sthal (where the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers meet) in Prayagraj Kumbh.
The history of the temple is not said to be very old. It is said that when the great warrior of Maratha rule Shrinath Mahadji Shinde had a short stay in Prayagraj in 1772 AD, this temple was built on the request of Queen Baijabai Scindia. Along with building the temple, Mahadji Shinde also got the Sangam banks of Prayagraj repaired and this area renovated. Earlier there was a small local temple here in which a swing used to hang. Later its arrangements were taken over by Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani. This Akhara is called the Akhara of Daraganj and it is responsible for the maintenance of the temple.
