Yamuna Chhath is a Hindu festival. It is believed that on this day Devi Yamuna descended on earth and this day is also known as Yamuna Jayanti. This festival takes place on Shukla Paksha Shashti in Chaitra month and it usually takes place during Chaitra Navratri.
Yamuna Chhath / Yamuna Jayanti Meaning:
In Hindu scriptures, Devi Yamuna is the consort of Bhagwan Krishna. That's why he is highly revered in Braj. Therefore Yamuna Chhath is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Vrindavan and Mathura. Yamuna River is considered a holy river along with Ganga, Godavari, Brahmaputra and Saraswati. Devi Yamuna is the wife of Bhagwan Krishna and the daughter of Surya Dev. Hence, Devi Yamuna is highly revered by the people of Braj and Mathura and is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm by the people of Vrindavan and Mathura.
Yamuna Jayanti Celebrations:
On the auspicious day of Yamuna Chhath, devotees wake up before dawn and take a spiritual bath in the Yamuna River. According to the Vedic calendar, special worship of Devi Yamuna is done in the auspicious time. As Devi Yamuna is known as the companion of Bhagwan Krishna, devotees also worship Bhagwan Krishna. Special food offerings known as 'Naivedyam' are prepared for Devi Yamuna.
After the puja, Brahmins are fed food and the prasad is distributed among friends and relatives. Devotees observe a strict fast on Yamuna Chhath. The next day the fast is broken after the morning worship. It is believed that diving in the Yamuna river can purify the soul and also attain eternal bliss and love.
