✨Thaipusam - थाईपुसम

Thaipusam Date: Tuesday, 11 February 2025

Thaipusam is an important festival celebrated by the Hindus of southern India during the Tamil month of Thai (January–February). Thaipusam is dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan, who is the son of Shiva and Parvati. Murugan is also known as Kartikeya, Subrahmanya, Sanmukh, Shadanana, Skanda and Guha. Thaipusam is the celebration of the victory of good over evil.

Why is Thaipusam celebrated?
It is believed that on this day, Devi Parvati gifted a spear to Bhagwan Murugan to defeat the demon army of Tarakasura and counter his evil actions. Therefore, the Hindu festival of Thaipusam commemorates the day when Devi Pavarti gave her son Bhagwan Muruga an invincible spear with which he destroyed the evil demons.

The Thaipusam festival begins on the full moon day and continues for ten days. Thousands of devotees gather at temples to prove their devotion towards God. According to the Skanda Purana, Murugan is the incarnation of Shiva's light and wisdom.

How to celebrate Thaipusam

25 January 2024
❀ On Thaipusam day, most devotees of Bhagwan Murugan offer him yellow or orange colored fruits and flowers – his favorite color and also wear clothes of the same color.
❀ Devotees offer milk, water, fruits and flowers and carry them on their shoulders to various Murugan temples far and near.
❀ The Thaipusam festival in Malaysia and Singapore is known for its festive fervor. The most famous Kavadi pilgrimage on Thaipusam day takes place in Batu Caves in Malaysia, where a large number of devotees carry 'Kavadi' in procession towards the Murugan temple.
❀ Many devotees, to please God, go to such an extent that they cause pain to their body. So, a major feature of the Thaipusam festival is the piercing of the body with hooks, skewers and small lances called 'vel'.
