On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India came into force, completing India's transition into a sovereign republic. The constitution replaced the British colonial Government of India Act (1935) as the country's governing text. This day is celebrated as Republic Day.
While India celebrates its Independence Day on 15 August when it earned independence from British rule, Republic Day commemorates the coming into force of the Constitution. January 26 was the chosen date because it was on this day in 1929 that the Indian National Congress issued the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj), protesting the Dominion status of British rule.
