Puthandu, also known as Puthuvarudam, marks the Tamil New Year and is the first day of the Tamil calendar or Chithirai month which is celebrated as Puthandu by the people of Tamil Nadu. Celebrated as Tamil New Year, this day holds great significance. Puthandu falls on approximately the same day every year in the Gregorian calendar. This year, Puthandu will be celebrated on 14th April.
History of Puthandu:
The origins of Puthandu can be traced to the reign of the Chola dynasty, which ruled Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India from the 9th to the 13th century. During this time, the Tamil calendar was created and the first day of Chithirai was designated as the Tamil New Year.
Importance of Puthandu
The first month of the Tamil solar calendar, Chithirai, begins with the Puthandu festival. This day is celebrated as a public holiday in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Other states also celebrate New Year on this day. On this day, West Bengal celebrates Poila Boishakh, Kerala celebrates Vishu, Punjab celebrates Baisakhi and Assam celebrates Bihu on this day.

पुथांडू, तमिल नव वर्ष का प्रतीक है और यह तमिल कैलेंडर का पहला दिन या चिथिराई महीने का पहला दिन है जिसे तमिलनाडु के लोगों द्वारा पुथांडू के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
Rituals of Puthandu Festival:
Puthandu, also known as Varsha Pirappu, is celebrated with great grandeur and pomp by Tamils all over the country.
❀ On the day of Puthandu, people start the day by visiting the temple.
❀ The celebration of Puthandu day is started by drawing Kolam.
❀ Puthandu-special dishes including Pongal and Mango Pachadi are prepared by families.
❀ People also sing devotional songs and invite prosperity and happiness into their homes. Later in the day, people gather together in their best traditional attire and enjoy delicious Puthandu-special dishes with their loved ones.
❀ Tamil people respect family elders and greet each other by saying Puthandu Nalvalathukal which translates to Happy New Year in English.
❀ One of the main traditions associated with Puthandu is 'Kanni' or the first darshan of the year. On the morning of Puthandu, Tamils traditionally wake up early, take bath and then look at auspicious objects such as gold, silver, fruits, flowers and mirrors as symbols of good luck.
