Purnima is a monthly festival on the Shukla Paksha of every month, so purnima can occur 12 times a year, and 13 times in the case of more months. Poona, Pooranamasi, Poonam are the different names of purnima in various folk languages.
In India, every month's purnima is celebrated with a festival. On the day of purnima, Hindu’s keep fasting, take bath in Ganga Maya and reciting the story of Satyanarayana ji. According to astronomical events, high tide comes in sea on the day of purnima as compared to other days.
According to the Hindu Panchang and astronomical position, the moon completes a round of the earth in 28 days. After 15 days, the Moon is at one end of the Earth. When the Moon is towards India, it is seen in its full state. When the moon appears in full form in India, that day is called the purnima day. And this event purnima (full moon) can happen at different times according to the position of the moon for each place or country.
