✨Panguni Uthiram - पंगुनी उथिरम

Panguni Uthiram Date: Friday, 11 April 2025

Panguni Uthiram is an important day for Tamil Hindus. It is celebrated in the month of Panguni when the nakshatra is Uthiram or Uttara Phalguni. Panguni is the twelfth and last month in the Tamil calendar. Panguni month is known as Meena month in other solar calendars.

Why is Panguni Uthiram celebrated?
This day coincides with Nakshatram Uthiram Poornima and it is believed that most of the celestial marriages took place on this day. The marriages of Devi Parvati and Bhagwan Shiva, Devi Devayanai and Bhagwan Murugan, Mata Sita and Bhagwan Ram were held on Panguni Uthiram day.

Since Sri Devayanai married Bhagwan Subramaniam on this day, it is an important festival for devotees of Bhagwan Subramaniam. Hundreds of devotees visit all the Murugan temples on this day. It is believed that Devi Parvati in the form of Gauri married Bhagwan Shiva at Kanchipuram and because of this belief, this day is also celebrated as Gauri Kalyanam Day.

This day is also known as Mahalakshmi Jayanti because on this day Devi Mahalakshmi descended on earth during the mythological churning of Kshir Sagar. This day is also celebrated as Bhagwan Ayyappan Jayanti. Bhagwan Ayyappan was born from the union of Bhagwan Shiva and Mohini, the female form of Bhagwan Vishnu.

How is Panguni Uthiram celebrated?
❀ Devotees of Murugan take the inscribed kavadis to Murugan temples to fulfill their vows.
❀ The Brahmanda Purana indicates that on Panguni Uthiram, millions of deities bathe in the Tumburu tirtha, one of the seven sacred ponds at the Venkateswara temple in Tirupati. It is said that a bath in the temple pond on this occasion frees one from the cycle of rebirth.
❀ The day holds special significance for the worship of the earth element, the Prithvi Linga, at the Ekambareswarar Temple in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, where the festivities last for 13 days.
❀ According to regional tradition, Parvati in the form of Gauri married Shiva at Kanchipuram. Hence this day is also celebrated as Gauri Kalyanam.
