🐅Mahalaya - महालया

Mahalaya Date: Sunday, 21 September 2025
Mahalaya

According to the Hindu calendar, devotees of Maa Durga celebrate Mahalaya a week before Durga Puja. Mahalaya is celebrated on the last day of Pitru Paksha. According to Hindu mythology, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar created Devi Durga on this day to defeat the demon king Mahishasura. This day marks the beginning of the arrival of Devi Durga in the earth world from Mount Kailash with her divine powers.

How is Mahalaya celebrated?
❀ The auspiciousness of Durga Puja begins with respect. Devotees wake up early in the morning to worship the goddess by singing Chandipath and listening to religious chants like Mahishasur Mardini.
❀ Sculptors make and paint the eyes of Goddess Durga.
❀ Many people celebrate this day to remember their ancestors. On the morning of Mahalaya Amavasya, devotees bid farewell to their ancestors, and in the evening, they perform Durga Puja for the Devi who steps on the earth to bless the devotees.
❀ This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion in West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka and Tripura.

Legend Behind Mahalaya Puja
Hindu devotees believe that the demon king Mahishasura was blessed that no god or human could ever kill him. After receiving the blessings, Mahishasura attacked the deities, and they were forced to flee from Devaloka after losing the battle. All the deities along with Lord Vishnu prayed to Adi Shakti to save Mahishasura from the wrath. It is believed that a divine light emerged from the bodies of all the deities and took the form of Devi Durga. On the tenth day, Maa Durga killed Mahishasura for nine days before killing her. Maa Durga is known as the Devi of power, and Durga Puja is widely celebrated throughout the country. Devotees pray to the Devi, who is said to come down to earth for ten straight days to bless her people.
