According to the Hindu calendar, every year on Krishna Ashtami of the month of Ashwin, married women keep the fast of Jitiya. According to the belief, by observing Jitiya Vrat, the child gets happiness, prosperity and longevity. Jitiya Vrat is also known as Jivitputrika and Jiutiya Vrat.
Under Jitiya Vrat, fasting women observe Nirjal Vrat throughout the day. At the time of fasting at the time of Paran, the Bhagwan takes food only after offering Arghya to the Sun. The end of Jitiya Vrat is usually done on the next day i.e. Navami Tithi. The traditions of Jitiya Vrat are similar to those of Chhath Puja. Jivitputrika Vrat is mainly celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

हिंदू पंचांग के अनुसार प्रत्येक वर्ष आश्विन मास की कृष्ण अष्टमी को सुहागन स्त्रियां द्वारा जितिया व्रत रखा जाता है। जितिया व्रत को जीवित्पुत्रिका एवं जिउतिया व्रत भी कहा जाता है।
Importance of Jitiya Vrat Puja
Jivitputrika i.e. Jitiya festival has special significance in Sanatan Dharma. By observing this vrat, the life of the child becomes longer. Also the son gets a healthy life. In this vrat, women keep a continuous waterless vrat for 24 hours. Due to the virtue of this vrat, the children of the vrat become bright, vigorous and intelligent.
Jitiya Vrat Puja Auspicious Time
According to the Panchang, Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month will start from 06:34 AM on 6th October and end at 08:08 AM the next day i.e. on 7th October. Udaya Tithi is considered in Sanatan Dharma. Therefore, Jitiya Vrat will be observed on 6th October.
Jitiya Vrat Puja Vidhi
❀ Wake up early in the morning and take bath
❀ After taking bath etc., bathe the idol of Surya Narayan.
❀ Perform Aarti with incense, lamp etc. and after that offer Bhog.
❀ Make a statue of an eagle and a lion from clay and cow dung.
❀ Offer incense, lamp, rice, flowers etc. to the idol of Jimutvahana made of Kusha.
❀ Worship according to the rituals and listen to the story of the vrat.
❀ Make sure to donate after breaking the vrat.
