Story behind Ganga Saptami: Maa Ganga had descended on this earth on the day of Ganga Dashara. The flow of the Ganges was so fast that there was a danger of the Ganges getting absorbed in the Hades or becoming unbalanced on this earth. For this reason, Mahadev Shiva absorbed the Ganges in his hair.

After some time, Mahadev Shiva freed Ganga from his hair, so that Ganga could give salvation to the ancestors of Bhagirath. Ganga started walking on the path shown by Bhagiratha. On the way, the ashram of sage Jahnu was destroyed by the tremendous velocity of the Ganges. This enraged sage Jahnu Rishi. He drank the entire Ganges water.

After this incident, Bhagirath and other deities prayed to sage Jahnu to free Ganga so that Ganga could do welfare of the people of this world. On this, the sage Jahnu freed the Ganges by flowing through his ear and the Ganges continued on its path.

According to religious stories, sage Jahnu liberated Ganga on the Saptami date of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha. For this reason this day is also known as the rebirth of Ganga and is also known as Ganga Jayanti and Jahnu Saptami. Due to this incident, one of the names of Ganga is Jahnavi, the daughter of sage Jahnu Rishi.
