According to the Hindu calendar in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Datta Jayanti, the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Margashirsha, is celebrated with great fervor as the incarnation/birthday of Dev Dattatreya. Bhagwan Dattatreya is a syncretic deity and is considered to be an incarnation of the Trimurti i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.

Dattatreya, the devotee Vatsal, who is very kind to the devotee, on remembering the devotee, becomes very happy at him. That is why they are also called Smritigami and Smritimatranuganta. The famous Datta sect in South India considers Bhagwan Datta as its main deity.

❀ On the day of Datta Jayanti, devotees wake up early, take bath in holy water and observe fast throughout the day.
❀ Bhagwan Dattatreya has three heads and six arms. His child form is worshiped on Dattatreya Jayanti.
❀ During the puja ceremony, specific flowers, incense sticks, lamps and sweets are offered.
❀ During the puja, sandalwood, vermillion and turmeric should be applied on the idol or picture of the deity.
❀ It is also important that after the puja begins, devotees should take seven rounds around the idol of Bhagwan Datta and distribute Prasad and Aarti to everyone in the puja.
❀ The temples of Bhagwan Dattatreya are the center of celebration on this day. Temples are decorated. At some places, Avadhoot Geeta and Jeevanmukt Geeta are also read, which are said to contain the voice of Bhagwan himself.

Datta Jayanti Significance

There are many temples dedicated to Bhagwan Dattatreya, especially in southern India. He is also a major deity of the state of Maharashtra. In fact, the famous Datta sect originated from the cult of Dattatreya. Datta Jayanti is celebrated with great joy and pomp in Bhagwan Dattatreya temples in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. It is believed that if a person worships Bhagwan Dattatreya with full devotion and observes a fast on the day of Dattatreya Jayanti, all his wishes and desires are fulfilled.

Devotees should chant mantras like Om Shri Gurudev Datta and Shri Guru Dattatreya Namah to purify and enlighten their soul and mind.
