📿Chaturmasya Vrat - चातुर्मास्य व्रत

Chaturmasya Vrat Date: Tuesday, 12 November 2024

Chaturmasya Vrat is observed for a period of 4 holy months and it starts from the next day of Dev Shayan Ekadashi in the month of Ashadha (June–July) and ends on Utthan Ekadashi in the month of Kartik (October–November). Chaturmasya Vrat is observed by all the gyani, yogis and devotees for the attainment of their respective desires. Keeping a silent fast (Maun Vrat) and spending time in worship of Bhagwan Vishnu is fruitful.

Mythology behind Chaturmasya Vrat
According to the Garuda Purana, there is a religious belief that during the Chaturmasya vrat, Bhagwan Vishnu falls asleep on the Shesh Naag (Anant Shesh) in the Kshir Sagar (Ocean of Milk). That's why that day is called Sayan Ekadashi. He wakes up from his deep sleep on Utthan Ekadashi which falls in the month of Kartik after four holy months.

Rituals of Chaturmasya Vrat
Chaturmasya Vrat is not very difficult but strict devotees observe this Vrat very strictly. The devotee wakes up before sunrise, takes a holy bath and worships Bhagwan Vishnu. No food items like milk, jaggery, curd, oil, brinjal, leafy vegetables, salty, spicy food, sweet dishes, meat and alcohol are consumed in Chaturmasya Vrat.

Some devotees observe this vrat month wise:
❀ Shravan month - Avoid leafy vegetables.
❀ Bhadrapada month - Curd is avoided.
❀ Ashwin month - Milk is avoided.
❀ Kartik month - Onion, garlic, urad dal are avoided.

What to do during Chaturmasya Vrat?

❀ Take bath before sunrise. Give a holy bath (abhishek) to the idol of Bhagwan Vishnu by chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam and Stotra etc.
❀ Chaturmas is believed to be the night of Bhagwan Vishnu, therefore, Vishnu devotees listen to his stories, narrate them to others through stories or hymns.
❀ The eight Ekadashis falling in these four months should be followed strictly.
❀ One should engage oneself in Vaishnava seva (invite them for prasad, chant with them and do other spiritual activities with them). Many devotees read the epics Mahabharata, Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavad Purana. There are also some devotees who participate in religious activities in the temple on a daily basis. Devotees spend time helping the poor and maintaining Vishnu temples.
❀ Tulsi leaves should be offered to God. Tulsi Mata should be worshiped and circumambulated.
❀ On the last day of the Chaturmasya vrat (Utthan Ekadashi or Kartik Shukla Ekadashi), the devotee offers dakshina (consisting of food, clothes and other daily items) to a Brahmin and receives his blessings.
❀ Follow celibacy for four months.
❀ During this, sleeping on the ground is considered very auspicious.
