Chandra Grahan Date: Sunday, 7 September 2025
Chandra grahan occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow. This occurs only during the full moon (Purnima), when the Moon is at Earth's farthest point from the Sun. A chandra grahan lasts a long time, taking several hours to complete, with completeness usually averaging around 30 minutes to even an hour. According to astrology, a chandra grahan is an astronomical event. When the Earth comes between the Moon and the Sun and the full or partial shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon, a partial or total chandra grahan occurs.

Pournaik Katha behind chandra grahan
According to mythology, when the samudra manthan was taking place, there was a huge war going on between the gods and the demons over the amrit paan, when the gods tricked the demons and drank the amrit.
Bhagwan Vishnu took the form of Mohini and assumed the form of a beautiful girl and persuaded everyone that the amrit would be distributed equally to everyone. The demons and the deities sat separately and Vishnu in the form of Mohini started distributing amrit to the deities, a demon named Rahu who thought that if he would sit among the gods, he would also get a share of the amrit. He was sitting with the gods and he too Took the amrit. He had become immortal forever, while doing this, Sun God and Moon God caught him and told this to Vishnu and Vishnu separated Rahu's edge from the Sudarshan Chakra, after that incident Rahu and Ketu were born.
Asura's head was known as Rahu and his torso was known as Ketu. He was the arch enemy of both Sun God and Moon God, that is why he always comes to his position and takes eclipse on both of them.
