To establish harmony between the solar year and the lunar year, a lunar month is increased in the almanacs every third year. This is called Adhikmaas or Adhimaas or Malmaas. The value of a solar year is 365 days, 15 ghadis, 22 palas and 57 vipals. While the lunar year is of 354 days, 22 Ghadis, 1 Pal and 23 Vipals.
When does Adhik Maas come?
In the Hindu calendar, once every three years, an additional month comes, which is known as
Adhikamas, Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas.
Why is it called Purushottam Maas or Adhik Maas?
In the scriptures, Adhik Maas has been called Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas.
According to Hindu Panchang, in the year 2023, Malmas will start from 18th July and will remain till 16th August 2023. Malmas comes every three years i.e. after every 36 months and 16 days. Adhik Maas is considered a very holy month in Hinduism. This month is considered special for the worship of Lord Vishnu. It is also called Malmas and Purushottam month. The year 2023 will be of 13 months due to Adhik Maas.
Adhikmaas is more auspicious for chanting rituals
It is believed that charity done with chanting and meditation during Adhikamas yields ten times more fruit than worshiping the Lord on regular days. According to astrology, a person gets manifold benefits by taking bath, doing charity and charity on the full moon of Adhik month. Recite

Things to keep in mind in Adhikmaas
It is considered inauspicious to do any holy work in Adhik Maas. The marriage done during this period becomes the cause of rift between husband and wife. Namkaran, Griha Pravesh, Yajnopaveet as well as shopping for valuables should not be done during Malmas.
Along with this, Adhik Maas is very important for doing penance and it is dedicated to Lord Purushottam who is a form of Lord Vishnu. In this month, the devotees get involved in pleasing the Lord with all their devotion and strength.
