In Puri Jagannath Temple of Odisha, there will be 'Nagarjuna Vesh' of
Bhagwan Jagannath and siblings today. The ritual is taking place after 26 years and due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the ceremony will be performed only in the presence of the sevayat (Pujari) and temple officials. On this occasion, the gods are dressed like warriors. The ritual was earlier held in the year 1994. The 'Basha Anukula' ceremony was held on Monday at Puri Shrimandir to begin the preparations for 'Nagarjuna Basha'.
This Vesh commemorates the killing of Sahashrarjuna by Parsuram or battle between Aurjua and his son Nagarjuna .
The deities dressed as Naga warriors with the golden weapons including arrows, bows, Hala (plough), Chakra (wheel), Musala (mace), dagger and knife. Besides, the deities will be dressed up with Trishul (trident), Dhala (shield) and Bagha Nakhi. Before adorning with these costumes, the deities will be dressed up with Pata saree.
Due to the COVID-19 restrictions this year, devotees are not allowed to have darshan of bhagwan on the day.
