Guru Nanak's birthday is celebrated by Sikhs on 14 April according to the Nanakshahi calendar but Vaisakhi or the Sikh New Year is also celebrated on the same day. The philosophy of Sikhism is meditation and devotion to the Creator, true living and service to humanity. Sikhs are meant to uphold the values of honesty, compassion, generosity, humility, integrity, service and spirituality on a daily basis.

According to the Bhai Bala Janmasakhi, Guru Nanak was born on the full moon of the Indian lunar month of Kartik. Sikhs have been celebrating the Gurupurab of Guru Nanak around November for this reason and this is how it has been incorporated into Sikh traditions.

Nanak ji believed that the sacred duty of humanity is to serve others selflessly.
