Ganga Sagar Mela is the second most popular Mela after Kumbh Mela. This time the holy bath of Ganga Sagar is starting at night itself.
The South 24 Parganas district administration has said that this time the Punya Lagna is from midnight (12:20) of January 14 to midnight (12:23) of January 15. Therefore, the devotees reaching the Mela will get the whole day.
It is the biggest Mela of India held in Sagardweep, West Bengal and is visited by a large number of people. Celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, this festival holds cultural and spiritual significance, where pilgrims take a dip in the holy waters of Ganga to purify their souls. Held during winter, this Mela is an annual gathering of pilgrims in and around Sagardweep to perform various rituals, light lamps and chant mantras.
The Chief Minister also informed that a total of 2,250 state buses, 250 private buses and six barge ships will be pressed into service to enable easy movement of tourists and pilgrims. Each barge vessel will be equipped with life jackets. He also said that 10 tourist buses will be kept ready.
