In Odisha, Ghatgaon Tarini is a famous pilgrimage center. Locals say that the King of Kendujhar was bringing Maa Tarini from Puri to Kendujhar with the condition that she would not move forward if she turned back. Raja was riding a horse and Mata was going after him. Raja came to know that the mata Tarini was coming back due to the sound of her jewelery but in the thick forest, the sound of jewels did not come near Ghatgaon and Raja looked back and saw that she was not coming. But mata Tarini was coming and the sound of her jewelery was not coming due to the soil of the forest. Due to the situation, maa Tarini stayed there and started worshiping as the queen of the forest.
Festivals:
The Chaiti Yatra is the most popular and famous festival of this place which is celebrated in the month of April. Generally it is celebrated between the last 5 days of Chaitra and first 2 days of Baisakh i.e. between 9-15 April every year. The first day of Baisakh is considered as the Odiya New Year.
Devotees very fondly offer coconut to Devi and this temple is worshiped by tribal priests. Devotees also offer bells to mata to fulfill their wishes. Locals celebrate Maha Bisub Sankranti in the month of Chaitra Purnima. Millions of tourists from within and outside the state visit Mata throughout the year. Maa Tarini Peeth is just 45 km from Kendujhar town.
