Mahabalipuram is a small town situated on the banks of the Bay of Bengal, 55 km from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Located on the seafront of
Mahabalipuram, this draped temple built a Dravid architecture. Being situated on the banks of the Bay of Bengal, its name is
Shore Temple, which can be called in Hindi as the
Tatiya Mandir (coastal temple).
At the time of construction, the temple was mainly dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva and his consort Mata Parvati. The temple was built by King Narasimhavarman II of the Pallava dynasty between 700 and 728.
In today's times,
the temple is not worshiped. The temple complex also has one large and other two smaller temples. The temple has been established as a UNESCO World Heritage since 1984.
Due to being near Chennai, there is generally more tourists in the weekend holidays. The best time to visit this temple complex is
during sunset. Due to being on the sea shore, this view is even more captivating.
Provision has been made for ticket of ordinary price for entering the temple premises. You can roam here with the ticket taken at the
Krishna Butter Ball counter, and from here the ticket can go to Krishna Butter Ball.
