Sas Bahu Ka Mandir is a group of two temples in the east corner of Gwalior Fort, and is popularly known as
Sas Bahu Mandir. The literal meaning is also taken from Bada and Chhota Mandir in general as mother-in-law's and daughter-in-law's temple. The origin of the name of the temple is likely from the name
Sahastrabahu which means thousand arms. Later it came to be known as Saas Bahu.
Who built the Saas Bahu Temple?
According to the archeological splendor and proud traditions, this temple was built by the Kachhapghat rulers. The construction of the temple was started by Rajaratn Pal which was completed in the reign of King Mahipal in 1093 AD.
Architecture of Sas Bahu Temple
The fully developed temple was constructed row-time in the north-south direction with the sanctum sanctorum, the maha mandapa and the ardha mandapa being from south to north. The richly carved pillars and the ceiling of the central auditorium are surrounded on three sides by pediries and the outer walls are full of geometric, floral motifs, animal birds, yards, dancers, musicians and beautiful scenes of Krishna Leela.The outer walls of the small temple are also painted in the same way. The temple also has a small central auditorium cell.
