History and Architecture of Kal Bhairav Temple Ujjain
This temple is dedicated to Kalabhairava. The image of the deity is of a face in the form of a rock painted with kumkuma or vermillion. The silver head of the deity is decorated with a Maratha-style turban, a tradition dating back to the days of Mahadji Shinde. Worship of Ashta Bhairava (\"Eight Bhairava\") is a part of the Shaiva tradition, and Kal Bhairava is considered their chief.

The present temple structure was built on the remains of an older temple. The original temple is believed to have been built by an unknown king named Bhadrasen. The present temple structure reflects Maratha influence. A replica of the temple has been installed on the Bhuj-Mundra road in Gujarat. Liquor is offered to the temple deity as one of the five Tantric rituals. In olden times, all five offerings were offered to the deity, but now only wine is offered; The other four offerings are in the form of symbolic rituals.

Outside the temple, vendors sell baskets of offerings, which contain coconuts, flowers and a bottle of wine. In 2015, the state government set up liquor counters outside the temple to ensure that devotees are not cheated by unlicensed sellers of liquor.

Devotees hand the wine bottles to the priest, who pours the wine into a saucer. He then prays and takes the saucer to the lips of the deity, which has a slit. He tilts the plate slightly and the wine begins to disappear. About one-third of the bottle is returned to the devotee as prasad.
