Vasant Panchami is known as the avtaran day of Maa Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom on Magh Shukla Panchami. Therefore, Basant Panchami is also specially celebrated as Saraswati Jayanti.
According to Indian season calculations, in the six seasons (Like Basant, Summer, Varsha, Sharad, Hemant, Shishir) that fall throughout the year. Basant is considered as Rituraj i.e. the king of all seasons. Although the best spring season starts from the Pratipada of Magha, but on the day of Panchami, people`s attention is more attracted to this season.
Yellow flowers that are easily available in season are glorified to offer to Maa Saraswati. Due to this festival being devoted to Maa Saraswati, on this day people worshiped educational materials like books and pen. The following works are considered to be very auspicious on this day, like the pran pratishtha of the temple, the foundation of the house, house entry ceremony, buying a new vehicle, starting a new business etc.
On this day newborn baby celebrates first feed and it is also believed that by making OM using honey on the tongue of the child, this process makes child as a brilliant student.
Saraswati Puja is one of the famous and important festivals of Bihar. Just as Durga Puja in Bengal, is organized in huge pandals, similarly Saraswati Puja is organized in Bihar.
One of India`s largest private school institution Vidya Bharati and its schools like Saraswati Shishu Mandir and Saraswati Vidya Mandir are given special importance to the worship of Maa Saraswati. Hence Vasant Panchami is celebrated with the most fervor in these schools. A hawan is also organized by the school on this day.
