As per Hindu religion, the Shravan is considered the holiest month of the year. And Sawan Ke Somwar is the most favorable day of Bhagwan Shiva. Sawan Ke Somwar means, the all weekday Monday during the Hindu calendar month Shravan.
Shravan is called Sawan in the language of ordinary speech.

Solah Somwar
Some of the devotees continue fasting on Monday even after Sawan. They continue the fasting practices till sixteen Mondays from the beginning of first Somwar (Monday). The sixteen days of fasting process is known as Solah Somwar Vrat. The weekly Monday fast has been practised for the duration of one day and generally, one-time food has been taken in the evening. The fasting in Sawan is usually observed in the month of July, August and September.
Significance of Sawan Somvar
Sawan Somwar is dedicated to the worship of Bhagwan Shiva. During the month of Saavan, devotees observe fast on every Somwar and the month of Saavan is considered to be the most auspicious month. Bhagwan Shiva is also known as Somnath or Someshwar. The word Somwar is associated with the moon and Soma means moon. Many female devotees of Bhagwan Shiva start Solah Somwar from the first Swam Somwar and they continue it till the completion of 16 Somwars.
According to mythology, during the month of Shravan, Bhagwan Shiva visits his in-laws and stays there with Goddess Parvati. Once Bhagwan Shiva promised Prajapati Daksh that he would come to his place in the month of Shravan and would stay there for the entire month. That is why during the month of Shravan, a large number of devotees come to Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple and worship Bhagwan Shiva.
The month of Sawan is considered auspicious for devotees who are unmarried. It is believed that devotees who worship Bhagwan Shiva with full devotion and dedication during the month of Shravan, get their desired life partner or get their desired wish fulfilled. Bhagwan Shiva is known as Bholenath and Bholenath always fulfills the wishes of the devotees.
Sawan Somvar Puja Rituals
1. On Somwar in Sawan, wake up early in the morning and take bath.
2. Light a ghee lamp by remembering Bhagwan Shiva at home.
3. Go to the temple and worship Bhagwan Shiva. Perform Jalabhishek and anoint with Panchamrit and perform Jalabhishek again.
4. Offer Bel Patra, Bhang, Dhatura, Garland of red or white flowers, any fruit and sweets.
5. Chant Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or Panchakshar Mantra and then light a ghee lamp and perform Aarti.
6. Those who worship and praise God with virtuous feelings and rules, get the desired results. During these fasts, wearing white clothes and applying white sandalwood tilak is worshipable and donating white clothes is the greatest glory.
7. You should fulfill your resolution by fasting as per your desired resolution.
Sawan Somvar Mantra
In addition to ओम नम: शिवाय,’ के अतिरिक्त चन्द्र बीज मंत्र ‘ओम श्रां श्रीं श्रौं स: चन्द्रयसे नम:’ और चन्द्र मूल मंत्र ‘ओम चं चन्द्रमसे नम:’ etc. on the day of Sawan somvar.
It is believed that by fasting and worshiping on Somwars of Sawan, all the troubles of life go away.
