Rang Teras, a colorful festival is celebrated on the Trayodashi tithi during the Chaitra Krishna Paksha. It is also called Rang Trayodashi. In other regions the period of Rang Teras corresponds to the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Phalguna, i.e. the months of mid February-March in the Gregorian calendar.

Which god is worshiped in Rang Teras?
The festival of Rang Teras is dedicated to Shri Krishna who is worshiped as Bhagwan 'Shrinathji'. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Nathdwara of Rajasthan state. During the period of Rang Teras, devotees from all corners of the country come here to visit 'Shrinathji' temple. In the Udaipur region of Rajasthan, Rang Teras is celebrated with the performance of 'Ghair' by the local people.

How is the Rang Teras festival celebrated?

Rang Teras is celebrated as a festival of thanksgiving to Indian farmers. On this auspicious day, farmers pay tribute to Mother Earth for providing her with all the essentials of life including food. Women observe a fast and perform ritualistic activities associated with this festival. As a part of this festival, the youth of the village display their heroic skills along with dance and lying down games.

In the Mewar region of the Indian state of Rajasthan, grand tribal fairs are organized on the day of Rang Teras to express happiness over the wheat harvest. The tribals of the surrounding areas also come to be a part of this colorful fair in the month of Chaitra. Rang Teras has been celebrated in this customary manner since the 15th century and the event is getting bigger with each passing year.

Crowds of elderly people play nagdas (a traditional musical instrument) and youths try to beat the music played with bamboo sticks and swords. This dance form is characteristic of the Mewar region and is known as 'Ghair'.

Colorful processions and frenzy aptly describe the festival of Rang Teras. In some regions it is also celebrated as a part of Holi celebrations. Holi is a colorful Hindu festival celebrated on the full moon during the month of Falgun. Being a part of this important festival, Rang Teras also celebrates the spirit of brotherhood. Rang Teras is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Bihar.
