The festival of Nanda Ashtami is celebrated in Kailashpur, Lata and Niti villages of Niti Mana valleys. The festival celebrates the journey of Nanda Devi to her mother's house and ends with her ceremonial departure from her mother's house on Nanda Ashtami. Nanda Devi Mahotsav is very important in the cultural and spiritual heritage of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.
Story behind Nanda Devi:
Parvati, the daughter of the hills and wife of Bhagwan Shiva, is known as Nanda Devi. Nanda Devi is one of the most popular deities in the hills of Uttarakhand. There are many Nanda temples located at all major places including Lata, Niti and Badrinath in the Niti Mana valleys.
It is believed that Nanda Devi is Yoga Maya, the child who took Krishna's place in the prison and escaped from the hands of Kansa and warned him that Devaki's son Krishna had already been born and he will end the terror of Kansa.
