Lakshmi Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Devi Lakshmi. It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is also known as Phalgun Purnima. Maa Lakshmi emerged from the churning of the ocean on this day, on this auspicious occasion devotees worship Maa Lakshmi, the Devi of wealth and prosperity with full devotion. This festival is also celebrated as Madan Purnima or Vasant Purnima. In some regions, people celebrate Lakshmi Jayanti as Uttara Phalguninakshatram. Lakshmi Jayanti is mainly celebrated in South India.
Significance of Lakshmi Jayanti:
On the day of Lakshmi Jayanti, devotees worship Devi Lakshmi with devotion and receive her blessings. Lakshmi Puja on the day of Lakshmi Jayanti is considered very powerful. Devi Lakshmi gives relief from the financial crisis and fulfills all the wishes of the devotees.
Kimbadanti of Lakshmi Jayanti:
The word Lakshmi is derived from the Sanskrit word Lakshya, which means goal. Lakshmi is the Devi of wealth, prosperity and fortune. She also provides material as well as spiritual development. She saves her devotees from sorrow and financial crisis. She is the consort of Bhagwan Vishnu and is also called Shri. According to the Vishnu Puran, Lakshmi is the daughter of Bhrigu and Khyati. Due to the curse of sage Durvasa, he left heaven and made Kseer Sagar as her home. She is the sister of Guru Shukracharya as well as the planet Moon. When the Devas and Danavs churned the Khir Sagar, from the ocean were born Chandra and Lakshmi who are considered to be the best forms of wealth and prosperity.
How to worship on Lakshmi Jayanti:
❀ On the day of Lakshmi Jayanti, the devotees finish their morning bath and place the idol of Devi Lakshmi on the altar and light a lamp of four lights, conch shells are also placed on the altar.
❀ Then anoint Lakshmi Maa with roli and rice and offer flower garland.
❀ Perform aarti of Devi Lakshmi by singing her stuti.
❀ After this, offer sweets as bhog to Devi Lakshmi and distribute the bhog among all the devotees after prayer.
❀ Devotees perform Lakshmi Homam on Lakshmi Jayanti, during the homam the 1008 names of Devi Lakshmi Sahasranamavali and Sri Suktam are recited.
❀ On the day of Lakshmi Jayanti, lotus flowers dipped in honey are used as ahuti to please Mahalakshmi.
Devotees should observe Lakshmi Jayanti devotionally to receive the blessings of Devi Lakshmi.
