Kumar Purnima is a festival celebrated on the full moon day during the month of Ashwin. This festival is one of the most popular and important festivals of Odisha. Unmarried women mainly observe this festival, wishing for a beautiful husband, so they worship Kumar Kartikeya. But, there is no ritual for the god especially enough, instead the sun and moon are worshiped.
How Kumar Purnima is celebrated:
❀ After bathing in the morning, the girls put on new clothes and offer food offerings to the Sun.
❀ Unmarried women fast throughout the day.
❀ In the evening when the moon rises, they again make offerings of a special type of food and after the rituals are over, take it as prasad.
It is a festival of happiness for the girls, everyone sings and dances. Songs are of a special nature. They also play a kind of game which is known as 'Puchi'.
Lakshmi Puja Festival in Kumar Purnima
This day is also celebrated as the birthday of Maa Lakshmi, the devi of wealth. Therefore, many people worship the goddess in their homes. Which is famous in Odisha and West Bengal.
The month of Kartik begins with Kumar Purnima which is one of the holiest months according to the Hindu calendar. It has great importance in Hindu culture. Bhagwan Jagannath and Krishna are prayed throughout the month of 'Kartik' which starts after Kumar Purnima till 'Rasa' Purnima.
