According to the Hindu calendar, the birth anniversary of Shri Khatu Shyam ji is celebrated every year on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Devuthani Ekadashi also falls on this day. On this day, along with the duly worship of Shri Khatu Shyam ji, various types of bhog are also offered. It is believed that Shri Khatushyam ji is the Kali Yugi incarnation of Bhagwan Shri Krishna. A grand temple of Shri Khatu Shyam is established in Sikar, Rajasthan. It is believed that every wish gets fulfilled just by having the darshan of God here.
Who was Shri Khatu Shyam ji?
According to the scriptures, the relation of Shri Khatu Shyam ji is believed to be from the Mahabharata period. He was the grandson of Pandu's son Bhima. Shri Khatu Shyam ji was very powerful. According to mythological beliefs, while the Pandavas were roaming from one forest to another while saving their lives, Bhima encountered Hidimba. Later Hidimba gave birth to a son who was named Ghatotkacha. Later Ghatotkacha had a son who was named Barbarik. Barbarik later came to be known as Khatu Shyam.
Why is the story of Khatu Shyam Baba famous?
During the war of Mahabharata, Barbarik sought permission from Shri Krishna to participate. But Shri Krishna knew the outcome of the war. In such a situation, Shri Krishna asked him for a donation to stop Barbarik and asked for his head in it. Barbarik donated his head without delay.
Pleased with the great sacrifice of Barbarik (Khatu Shyam), Shri Krishna gave a boon to Barbarik that in Kali Yug you will be called Shyam. After granting the boon, his head was buried in Khatu Nagar (Sikar district of present-day Rajasthan state), hence he is called Khatu Shyam Baba.
It is believed that a cow had come to that place and was shedding milk from its breasts on its own every day. Later, when the place was excavated, the head was found there, which had been handed over to a Brahmin for a few days. Once the king of Khatu Nagar was inspired to build a temple in a dream and beautify it in Sheesh Mandir. So a temple was built at that place and Ekadashi of Kartik month was decorated in Sheesh temple. Therefore, the birth anniversary of Shri Khatu Shyam ji is always celebrated on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi.
