Kharmas Date: Saturday, 15 March 2025
Bhagwan Surya is considered the king of the planets. They transit sequentially in 12 zodiac signs, which has auspicious and inauspicious effects on people. When the Surya enters the zodiac signs of Bhagwan Brihaspati, Pisces and Sagittarius, then Kharmas occurs. According to the Hindu calendar, Kharmas falls between the months of Phalgun-Chaitra and Margashirsha-Paush. That is, according to the English calendar, it falls between March-April and December-January.
Why does Kharmas Happens?
According to Hindu Satsra, whenever Surya Bhgawan comes into the zodiac signs of Jupiter, Pisces and Sagittarius, Kharmas occurs. During this period, religious activities i.e. puja and havan can be done but no auspicious work can be done. However, it is also argued that Surya Dev starts serving his Guru and is not present in any auspicious work. In auspicious works, Navagrahas are worshiped and Havan is performed for them. How will the auspicious works be done when the Surya, the king of the planets, is not present?

Mythological Story behind Kharmas
The time of Kharmas comes twice a year, according to astrology, whenever the Surya enters Jupiter's zodiac signs Sagittarius and Pisces, then Kharmas occurs. By disassembling the word Kharmas, it is known that Khar means donkey and Maas means month. According to the legend, to convey the importance of Kharmas to every person, a story is told in which it is told that the Surya revolves around the universe sitting on his chariot of seven horses and during the revolution, the chariot of Bhagwan Surya does not stop anywhere even for a moment.
But the seven horses of the Surya get tired after running all over the universe throughout the year, hence for some interval the running of the chariot is handed over to Khar for the horses to rest and drink water, due to which the speed of the Surya's chariot changes. According to the legend, the donkey i.e. Khar, with its slow speed, drives the chariot during the Kharmas season, as a result of which the Surya's glory diminishes and appears on the earth. From the day of Makar Sankranti, the Surya again moves forward riding on its seven horses and the bright light of the Surya gradually increases on the earth.
