The last day of the festival is celebrated as Bhai Dooj, Bhaiya Dooji or Bhai Tika. It is celebrated like the Rakshabandhan associated with the dear relationship of sister-brother but with some different rituals. This religious day brings alive the intimacy of brotherly love.
This day is also called Yam Dwitiya. The five-day Diwali festival ends on the day of Bhai Dooj. This festival is celebrated on the second date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, the sisters bless their brother's bright future with a tilak from Roli and Akshat. Also, the brother gives some gifts or dakshina to his sister. The method of celebrating Bhaiya Dooj festival is not the same everywhere. In North India, on this day, the sisters give coconut to the brother by applying Akshat and Tilak, while in Eastern India, the sisters apply tilak to the brother after the Shankhnad and give some gifts.
It is believed that on this day in the evening, sisters burn the chaumukh lamp in the name of Yamraj and keep it outside the house. This time is considered very auspicious if eagle is seen flying in the sky above. It is believed that Yamraj has accepted the prayers that the sisters are asking for the age of the brother, or he will go to the eagle to convey the message of the sisters to Yamraj.
Right Method of Applying Tilak to Brother on the Day of Bhai Dooj
❀ Take a bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and worship God.
❀ Before the Muhurta, decorate the plate for the brother's tilak like keep kumkum, vermilion, sandalwood, fruits, flowers, sweets, intact and betel nut in the plate.
❀ Make a square with ground rice flour or batter and make the brother sit on this square in the auspicious time.
❀ After all this, apply tilak to the brother and after that give flowers, betel leaf, betel nut, batashe and black gram to the brother and perform his aarti.
❀ After tilak and aarti, feed sweets to the brother and feed food prepared by your own hands.
❀ While doing Tika on Bhai Dooj, sister should chant this mantra for brother: गंगा पूजे यमुना को, यमी पूजे यमराज को। सुभद्रा पूजे कृष्ण को, गंगा यमुना नीर बहे मेरे भाई आप बढ़ें, फूले-फलें
