Ahilya Utsav is a festival celebrated in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in honor of the 18th-century queen Ahilyabai Holkar, who is considered a symbol of courage and strength.
Why Ahilya Utsav is celebrated:
Veerangana Rani Ahilya Bai popularly known as 'Philosopher Queen' died on 13 August 1795 at the age of seventy. Her legacy still lives on and the various temples, dharamshalas and public works done by her stand as testimony to the great warrior queen.
She also turned his attention to various philanthropic activities, ranging from building temples, ghats, wells, tanks and rest houses in the north to pilgrimage centers in the south. Her most notable contribution was the renovation and repair of the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple in 1780.
How is Ahilya Utsav celebrated?
Ahilya Utsav is celebrated every year on the occasion of the death anniversary of the heroic queen Ahilya Bai of Indore. On this morning, garlands are offered to the idol of Devi Ahilya Bai at the Rajwada. This is followed by an anointing of Lord Shiva at the Indreshwar temple and a symbolic palanquin procession is also taken out in the evening. The birth anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai is celebrated by the Executive Chairman of Devi Ahilyotsav Samiti.
In the month of May on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai, Government of Madhya Pradesh's Culture Department organises events in Indore. The event includes various cultural programs like music, dance and poetry recitation. It is celebrated by the people to pay respect to Ahilyabai and her legacy.
