🌝Adhik Mas - अधिक मास

Adhik Maas is an extra month in the Hindu calendar. The month of Adhik Maas or Malmaas is considered inauspicious. There is a ban on doing all kinds of auspicious work in this month. It is also called Purushottam month. Due to this extra month, in Brijbhoomi the whole year is also called Launad year. More Maas looks after three years. The month of Malmass will start as soon as Pitripaksha ends.

What happens in Adhik Maas?
The Hindu calendar has 12 months. Its base is the sun and the moon. The Sun year is 365 days and about 6 hours, while the lunar year is considered to be 354 days. There is a gap of about 11 days between these two years.

This difference becomes equal to one month in three years. To bridge this gap, a lunar month comes into existence every three years. This month which is growing is called Adhik Maas or Malmass. Bhagwan Vishnu is worshiped in Adhik Maas.

Why named as Purushottam Maas?

It is said that Bhagwan Vishnu is the Bhagwan of Adhik maas. Purushottam is his only name. Hence, Adhik maas is also called Purushottam month. There is also a story behind this. According to belief, Indian mystics by their calculation method prescribed a deity for every lunar month. Since the Adhyamas appeared to strike a balance between the Sun and the lunar month, no deity was prepared to become the ruler of this additional month. In such a situation, santh and mahatma urged Bhagwan Vishnu to take the burden of this month on himself. Bhagwan Vishnu accepted this request and thus this month became Purushottam month.

No auspicious functions such as marriage, shaving, house entrance are performed in the Adhik mass.
