The incarnation day of Mata Ganga on earth by King Bhagiratha from the kamandal of Brahma Ji, the creator of the universe, is known as Ganga Dussehra. Before the incarnation on earth, the river Ganga used to be a part of heaven. The Ganga River is considered the holiest river in India, hence she is reverently worshiped like Mother, calling Mata Ganga or Ganga Maiya.

On the day of Ganga Dussehra, devotees offer special prayers to Mata Ganga to thank her descent on earth. And by taking a dip in Ganga ji, devotees purifying themselves and perform charity, fasting, bhajan and Ganga Aarti.

Thousands of devotees take holy dip at Prayagraj / Allahabad, Garhmukeshwar, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Patna and Gangasagar on Ganga Dussehra. Ganga Aarti of Dashashwamedh Ghat Varanasi and Har ki Pauri Haridwar are world-famous on the day of Ganga Dussehra. In mythological cities near Mathura, Vrindavan and Bateshwar, near the Yamuna river, devotees bath Yamunaji as Ganga Maiya on this day.

On the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, the devotees also distribute beverages like Lassi, Sharabat, Thandai, Cold water and Shikanji and sweets like Jalebi, Malpua, Kheer and Fruits. In some places people celebrate this day with kite flying. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated a day before the famous Nirjala Ekadashi.

Although Ganga Dussehra is celebrated all over the country, but in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, this festival is known only by the name Dussehra. The meaning of Dussehra in Uttarakhand is the Dwarpatra (gate) made by Brahmins or priests which is decorated above the doors with Vajranivarak mantras.

The priest draws colorful pictures of Shiva, Ganesha, Maa Durga, Maa Saraswati, Ganga Maiya etc. on a square white paper and a circular or multi-circular lotus is marked around it. In its outermost part, the following verses are written with the names of five rishis for Vajranivarak.

अगस्त्यश्च पुलस्त्यश्च वैशम्पायन एव च ।
जैमिनिश्च सुमन्तुश्च पञ्चैते वज्र वारकाः ॥1॥

मुने कल्याण मित्रस्य जैमिनेश्चानु कीर्तनात ।
विद्युदग्निभयंनास्ति लिखिते च गृहोदरे ॥2॥

यत्रानुपायी भगवान् हृदयास्ते हरिरीश्वरः ।
भंगो भवति वज्रस्य तत्र शूलस्य का कथा ॥3॥
