Ram Navami is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Bhagwan Ram. The purpose of celebrating this festival of joy and gaiety is the "rise of the light of knowledge" within us. Bhagwan Ram was born to Raja Dasharath and Rani Kaushalya. The festival of Ram Navami is celebrated on the Navami of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. According to Hindu scriptures, Bhagwan Ram was born on this day and he stands as the symbol of Maryada Purushottam. According to Hindu scriptures, Bhagwan Vishnu incarnated as Shri Ram in the world to end the atrocities of Ravan in Tretayuga and re-establishment of religion.

Bhagwan Ram is his own light, Lakshmana (the younger brother of Bhagwan Ram) means vigilance, Shatrughna means one who has no enemy or who has no opponent. Bharata means worthy. Ayodhya (where Ram is born) means a place that cannot be destroyed.
