Durga Puja Celebration in Kolkata (कोलकाता का दुर्गा पूजा समारोह)

The atmosphere of Durga Puja festival in Kolkata is different. The Durga Puja here is world famous and it was also included in UNESCO's representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021. Every year, Kolkata brings a new theme to the Durga Puja pandals, which are unique and innovative in their own way.
How is the Durga Puja festival of Kolkata celebrated?
The festival of Durga Puja will be celebrated from October 20 this year and will continue till October 24. It begins with Mahalaya, in which the ritual of 'Pran Pratishtha' takes place. Shashti, Saptami, Ashtami are other auspicious days which have their own significance and rituals. The festival culminates on the day of Vijaya Dashami when the idols are immersed in the rivers. Women perform the traditional Bengali 'Dhunuchi' dance during the Durga Puja festival. Post the COVID pandemic, the City of Joy Kolkata is very excited to finally host the biggest celebration once again.

The sixth day of Navratri i.e. the first day of Durga Puja in Kolkata; The lavishly decorated idols are placed in public pandals. Then the idol is decorated with flowers, clothes, ornaments, red vermilion. Around 37,000 community pujas are organized every year across the state. Of these, around 2,500 are held in Kolkata.

The city of Kolkata does not sleep during these 10 days of Durga Puja. It is not just a festival but a feeling for the people of West Bengal. The people of Kolkata get ready months before the festival and look forward to the happiest days of the city throughout the year.
